Nutrition guideEating during treatment & protecting your muscle
General guidance only — always plan your diet with your oncologist and an oncology dietitian.
Why oncologists say "eat whatever you want"
Their main fear is rapid weight loss and dehydration during treatment, so any calories are treated as better than none. It's well meant — but it isn't a plan. Sugary, low-nutrient food can hold weight on the scale while muscle quietly wastes away, and the body misses the protein and nutrients it needs to rebuild blood counts between cycles.
Have a frank discussion with your oncologist and dietitian.
Strategy to limit muscle wasting & decline
- Protein at every small meal — often around 1.2–1.5 g per kg of body weight a day, if your kidneys allow (check with your team).
- With nausea: cold, low-smelling foods — smoothies, chilled broth, yoghurt, protein purees.
- Small amounts every 2–3 hours; sip fluids between meals, not with them.
- Gentle movement or resistance exercise most days to keep muscle working.
- Track deficiencies and blood counts so gaps are caught early.
Have a frank conversation — questions for your oncologist & dietitian
- Can you refer me to an accredited oncology dietitian now, before I lose weight?
- How are we tracking my muscle — not just my scale weight (grip strength, body composition on my CT scans)?
- Which nutrition markers are on my regular blood tests (albumin, ferritin, B12, vitamin D)?
- If nausea stops me eating solid protein, which medical nutrition drinks suit my cancer and treatment?
- Can we start anti-nausea medication before treatment day, so I don't start each cycle depleted?
- Is there anything I should avoid or time carefully with my specific treatment (supplements, IV vitamins, matcha / green tea, iron)?
Bring this list to your next appointment. Ask for a written nutrition plan you can follow on bad days.
